North Carolina
has always valued education highly. The University of North Carolina is the oldest
state chartered university in the United States. We have one of the finest community
college systems and some of the finest private universities and colleges in the country.
State government has emphasized public education and has been an innovator with
Smart Start and other programs. On this page you will find links to the University

Right: NCCBI President Phil Kirk also serves as
chairman of the State Board of Education. North Carolina is the only
state where the head of the state chamber of commerce also serves as
head of the public schools.
