Former NCCBI Staff Exec Clayton Dies

Ivie L. Clayton, retired president of NCCBI
and former North Carolina revenue commissioner, died in Raleigh on Feb. 1.
He was 84 and had been in declining health for a number of years.
Clayton
was born in Roxboro and graduated from George Washington University.
Following service in World War II he joined the North Carolina Department of
Revenue in 1946 and worked there for 25 years, He was named revenue
commissioner in 1965 by then-governor Dan Moore. During his years of revenue
service he served as president of the National Tax Association, president of
the Southeastern Tax Association and chairman of the board of the National
Federation of Tax Administrators.
Clayton joined NCCBI, then known as the North Carolina Citizens Association,
as president and secretary in 1972 and remained in that position until his
retirement in 1986. He also served on the boards of Durham Life Insurance
Co., the Research Triangle Institute, the N.C, Museum of Art Trustees and as
president of the N.C. Museum of Art Foundation. He received NCCBI’s Citation
for Distinguished Public Service in 1990.
NCCBI President Phil Kirk said “Ivie Clayton was the face of business in
North Carolina for many years, and we will miss him. He also was very good
as commissioner of revenue and greatly improved that agency, during his
career there.”
Clayton is survived by his wife, the former Rebecca Wicker; daughter Ellen
Clayton of Wilmington; son Lawrence Clayton of Memphis; a sister and a
brother.
