Why You Should Attend
The
business community and our state’s elected officials will be faced with many
opportunities and challenges during the General Assembly’s 2004 legislative
session. There will be
new ideas, new allies for the business community and new opportunities to work
with our elected leaders. When the General Assembly convenes on May 10, legislators will elect their leadership, appoint committees and get
started addressing the tough issue of dealing with the state’s budget
challenges.
An
important opportunity for business leaders to hear first hand about where
things stand in the General Assembly will come at NCCBI’s annual Legislative
Conference. The event will be held on Wednesday, May 12, at the
McKimmon Center on the campus of N.C. State University. As leaders
in your communities and industries, we urge you to make plans to attend this
important event.
The
day will begin at 1 p.m. with presentations from
the state’s leading political figures. You will hear straight-forward
talk from House Speakers Jim Black and Richard Morgan and Senate leader Marc
Basnight. The House and Senate Appropriations committee
co-chairs, Rep. Jim Crawford and Sen. Linda Garrou, will discuss budget
priorities.
Lt.
Gov. Beverly Perdue will address the group on N.C.’s military bases, Attorney General Roy
Cooper will speak about issues in the N.C. Department of Justice, Community
College President Martin Lancaster will give an update on workforce development,
General Assembly Fiscal Analyst David Crotts will give the latest news on
state revenues, and Wilmington Chamber executive Connie Majure-Rhett will give
a briefing on Amendment One: Self Financing Bonds. The
conference will conclude at 5:00 p.m.
Following the conference, NCCBI will stage its popular Legislative Reception
at the Capital City Club in downtown Raleigh. The reception from 5:30 to 7:00
p.m. will honor legislators, the Council of State, the Governor's Cabinet and judges from the Supreme
Court and Court of Appeals.
Cost
for NCCBI members for the conference and reception will be $100 per person or
$75 per person when registering groups of five or more. Non-members can attend the conference and reception for
$120.
